Functions
The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules through diffusion with the environment and blood. It works in collaboration with the circulatory system to provide oxygen for the body. In addition to gas exchange, it also allows for speech and coughing and sneezing to rid of mucus and irritants.
Cellular Respiration vs. Breathing
Cellular respiration is not to be confused with breathing. Breathing is simply the exchange of gases between the body and the environment. Cellular respiration is a metabolic process in which it converts biochemical energy into ATP and then waste products.
